Yankton County Emergency Medical Services is located in Yankton, South Dakota. We provide ambulance coverage to all of Yankton County as well as portions of Cedar and Knox Counties in northeast Nebraska, serving approximately 23,000 people in a 500 square mile area.
Our staff includes five full-time Paramedics and thirty-five part-time Emergency Medical Technicians. The part-timer's training level ranges from EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate all the way to Paramedic. At any given time, there is one full-time Paramedic and one part-time EMT on first call duty, while a second full-time Paramedic and one volunteer EMT cover second call. If additional crews are needed, they are paged on an as-available basis.
The emergency care system in Yankton County would not be complete without our network of First Responders. Medically trained volunteers in area towns such as Lesterville, Gayville, Volin, Irene and Wakonda are called out to take care of patients prior to ambulance arrival.
The city of Yankton (pop. 15,000) is nestled on the bank of the Missouri River that separates South Dakota and Nebraska. U.S. Highway 81, a Pan-American roadway that stretches from Mexico to Canada, becomes four busy lanes of traffic as it runs right through the center of town. We are also connected to Interstate 29, thirty miles to the east, by another four-lane highway.
